Conservative Party Candidate If we are elected to represent our areas on Leeds City Council we will continue to work with our MP Alec Shelbrooke, who has, for nearly five years now, worked closely with our communities in order to represent the residents in objections to the initial proposed route by HS2 Ltd. Furthermore, our MP has committed to supporting residents throughout the pending petition stage whenever the Bill relating to Phase 2b comes before Parliament. If we are lucky enough to be elected as your local councillors in May then we will be supporting residents and our MP throughout that process.

Leeds City Council is run by a Labour administration that has a large majority of Councillors on the Council, including the incumbent Labour Councillors in Rothwell, Garforth & Swillington and Kippax and Methley. To date, the Council has provided little support to our areas since the initial HS2 route was announced, indeed it transpired that the Labour administration was working against our area, rather than with us, by lobbying for a HS2 station location that negatively affects our communities. On 3rd May, unless there is a change of leadership on the Council, we can’t promise to change the way Leeds City Council continues to ignore our communities, but we can promise to work tirelessly as local councillors to hold the Labour Council to account and to support the actions of our MP who has worked with the community for nearly five years in order to secure changes to the way HS2 arrives in Leeds.

Green Party The Green Party opposes the building of HS2 entirely, unlike Labour and the Conservatives. Local Greens have been active in opposing HS2 plans to build a long, high viaduct across Methley and Woodlesford. This proposal will completely change the local landscape and will destroy green space used for leisure activities in those communities. Also, the construction works for it will cause local residents considerable misery for several years.

Labour Party On the 14 March 2017 Rothwell’s Labour councillors issued a statement: “We have made clear that we as local Labour councillors cannot support HS2 unless the huge blight on Woodlesford and Oulton is lifted.” Read our full statement here http://bit.ly/2nvUCWx

All three main political parties support HS2 However, as local politicians with no power over the decision, we refuse to support a route that blights our area. We made this decision after listening to local people, studying the evidence and deciding to do what is in the best interest of our local area

Our position continues to be to stand up for local people. We oppose HS2 while it impacts so badly on our local community. We believe in protecting our local area, protecting local people and protecting local services.

The Conservative/Liberal Democrat government imposed this route on our community with no proper consultation, no adequate compensation and no thought or care for local people. We believe the north of England urgently needs investment in our transport infrastructure and want an HS3 rail line to improve links between our northern cities.

Liberal Democrats The Rothwell Liberal Democrats are the only local representatives that actually back up what we say with action on HS2. On Leeds City Council, both the Labour and Conservative Groups welcome HS2 to the city. Not one of their councillors, of either party, have ever voted against HS2 in the Council Chamber, and the Conservative MP has never voted against it in Parliament. All three LibDem council candidates are Oulton & Woodlesford residents directly affected by HS2 and all are committed to oppose it vocally and through our votes at Leeds Civic Hall to make sure the blight on our area is not ignored.
